Welcome to the real world

I stumbled upon “fallen princesses“, an online exhibit of photos taken by the Canadian photographer Dina Goldstein. The artist thought that the princesses we all know from Disney movies and their old fables needed some debunking.

“In all of the images the Princess is placed in an environment that articulates her conflict. The ‘…happily ever after’ is replaced with a realistic outcome and addresses current issues” (via Fallen Princesses)

The photographer is interested in “imagining Disney’s perfect Princesses juxtaposed with real issues that affected women around [her], such as illness, addiction, and self-image issues”.

What we notice also is that these are not photos of Paris Hilton or of the Kardashians; it’s Cinderella and Snow White. The little girls who dream of  the ideal and dreamlike surroundings these characters inhabit don’t know about taxes or about jobs…. What these photos are playing on is the difference between the Disney vision played out for children and the realities of life as shown by Rapunzel getting chemo therapy or Ariel being a freak in a tank.
