A not so relaxing class

September 28, 2016 Leave a comment

For her first Tai-chi class, a class that is supposed to be relaxing, calming, and good for the
body, my mother was everything but relaxed and calm. Imagine her all sweaty, anxious and a bit irritated. Here’s why:

Last week, my mother went to her very first Tai-chi class. Well, not really. On her way, she kind of got lost. She asked the way to passersby because she didn’t have a roadmap, nor a GPS in her car… she could have used her smartphone, but she didn’t think about it. It took her some time though to realize that yes, she found a building that could have been the right one. Unfortunately it wasn’t in the right town. She was in the wrong town. To keep it short, she found her Tai-chi class 30 minutes after it began. Too late to join the class. That’s my mother.

Each year, every town has its “forum des associations”, that’s where you go to find cooking class, computer class, language class, dancing class, gardening class, painting class, zumba class, … in your own town.

My mother who knows me too well, told me not to miss this forum. And I almost did. I thought the forum was on the second Sunday of September but it yoga-1was on the first one. >.<     And I found it out the day before the Big day.

Since my mother insisted that I have to “find an activity to do” there, I found a yoga class not too far from my place – less than 15 minutes by foot. It’s a Hatha yoga class that will start in early October. It won’t be my first yoga class; several years ago in the U.S. I took yoga classes and I really liked it. I hope it’ll be the same here.

Regarding the series The Sopranos, I am not done yet. I still have the last season to watch before the end of October. It’ll be fine. I’ll watch the entire series on time.

Nice break

My first week-off  of this2minutes summer.

I spend it at the beach. Well, I don’t take sunbath, lying down on the beach for hours and hours… after five minutes I am totally bored even if I read a book or do crosswords. Moreover you’ll have to wait years to see me wear a swimsuit. I have so many complexes about my body that I am at the point that I don’t wear shorts anymore, so forget about a swimsuit.

So what I do instead of sunbathing or swimming in the sea is walk. I put on good shoes on and I walk along the seashore, sometimes for hours. Alone, of course.

Luckily the weather is awesome : still hot, still very sunny, exactly like in July and August except that there are no lifeguards on duty.

Sport & meditation

Since I moved back in my country, I haven’t been especially taking care of my body → no sport at all. And I can notice a big (ah ah!) difference, I gained weight, you have no idea. No physical activity to what you add everyday good home-cooking – to catch up all the time spent away from my family (years and years) – is a very bad combination. The worst is that my mother is  happy to see me with more weight, as if I was skinny before! I was at the right weight but now, none of the pants I packed during my moving in summer 2013 fits me. None.

The first months after my international moving, I looked for a good gym but there was none: they were all much smaller and all more expensive than those in the U.S. In a nutshell, pay threetennis_shoes times more for four times less space/equipment. Not very motivating, don’t you think?

And I need a gym. I can’t jog outside or exercise at home – I need to be “stuck” in a place where I can do nothing else but physical exercise for some time, otherwise I don’t do it.

Concerning meditation, I should make a weekly planning to make myself meditate otherwise I’ll forget it or find a good excuse not to do it despite the fact that mediation is very beneficial for the mind and the body. Actually I miss it. I never thought I’d say that but meditation has a real positive impact on my life. All I need is motivation to start a new routine to meditate regularly.

This week

I finally went to a free full-body skin cancer screening that was offered by the Skin Cancer Foundation’s Road to Healthy Skin Tour.  I was a little worried because I have a couple of what I would call ‘abnormal moles’ and it turns out that I was right. Actually they are ‘atypical moles’ but not melanoma yet. Yes, “yet” because these atypical moles are one of the most important risk factors for melanoma. So, if they change, that won’t be a good sign at all but the dermatologist who examined me didn’t prescribe me a biopsy since these moles haven’t changed for years. Anyway… It was a very thorough exam and I left with some coupons and sunscreen.

I received my birthday presents with six days in advance. My parents didn’t want me to miss my birthday, that’s what they sent their parcel very early; and well, we never know with postal services… we may have surprises. Did I tell you that once, my mother shipped a package (one of those sold by the post office) to me and four days later SHE received her own package?!  My mother was worried that a present wouldn’t survive the transit so I had to open all my birthday presents almost a week before my birthday. She was scared that the frame of a picture would break. She reproduced the photograph of our neighbor’s cat in France. I love this cat. Capucine. She always looks like she’s thinking “tu m’ touches, je t’ bouffe” which means something like “you touch me, I kill you”. ^.^ And if you want to put her to the test, well, you’ll regret it because she really means it. ^.^ She’s a cutie. So, back in December my mother was complaining to my father and me that her friends who go to painting lessons with her are asked to do paintings of this and that from members of their families and that she isn’t. Therefore, I asked her to paint Capucine. “It’s difficult to paint a cat!” -_-  but she did it anyway and it’s a very beautiful painting*, faithful to the original photograph. And, no, we don’t see on the picture Capucine’s deadly look; instead we see her belly we can’t touch, no no no!

*It’s in “my photos” in the right column.

Free screenings

April 16, 2012 Leave a comment

It is again this time of the year where hospitals, pharmacies and dermatologists offer free full-body skin cancer screenings. I took an appointment because it is a kind of cancer that can go unnoticed… until it spreads out in the body and creates tumors. Moreover these past years I began to see brand new moles developping on my body. For years and years I only got four moles on my right arm and now, there are more than twenty of them! And that’s just one arm and since people with lots of moles – as well as those with red hair and fair skin – are more at risk of the most dangerous form of skin cancer, I prefer to have an expert look at my skin. I never went to a tanning salon and well, I don’t spend my summers getting a tan either – I have a lot of hang-ups… “v-neck” shirts are showing too much skin for me (well, not exactly..but I have acne there, too) I’m not the kind of girl who’d spend her days in a bikini on a beach.

We’ll see what the doctors will tell me…

I used to go to the gym twice/three times a week and exercise on all the cardio machines there are in there, treadmill, elliptical, bicycle, stepper, you name it … then I go on the abs and arms machines. And I can tell you that running on a steady pace on a treadmill is not the most exciting thing to do. But now, it’s all over. I can barely get through a 30 minute workout without  daydreaming about something else. Exercise isn’t fun anymore. What happened? It’s simple, really. I am bored. Actually, after three minutes of exercise I’m like “okay, now what?” I’m bored there. And it doesn’t matter if I listen to an audio book or to the radio or even watch TV, I’m just bored at the gym. I noticed that when I listen to music, I tend to use songs to count how long I’ve been exercising since most of the songs last about 3,4 minutes. So I don’t enjoy the music at all.

Maybe it is time to change my training routine. I’ll try to alternate more workouts. We’ll see.
